George Lucas Still Thinking about an ‘Indiana Jones 5′

It just seems impossible doesn't it?

Coming Soon got a chance to speak with George Lucas as he hit the town to present the American Cinematheque’s 23rd annual award to Samuel L. Jackson and they obviously squeezed in a couple of Indiana Jones and Star Wars related questions. Earlier this week I prepped an article talking about how the latest Indy flick was considered by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as a comedy/musical when it came to Golden Globe consideration, it was going to be a snarky little article, but I abandoned it just because it felt mean spirited rather than newsworthy, but my feelings on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull remains - it was just plain bad. So, when Lucas says he is still considering a fifth film it baffles me just a smidge. Then again, I guess we can all learn from our mistakes, but then you have to wonder why Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones turned out like they did if that was the case.

When asked about Harrison Ford’s comments regarding the potential of a fifth Indy adventure Lucas told the site, “Yes - we’re looking for a “MacGuffin,” which is an object that he goes after. They’re very hard to come by!” He wasn’t as quick to commit to bringing back both Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) and Marion (Karen Black), “It really depends on what it is Indy goes looking for and then how the story falls out of that, and then how convenient or inconvenient to have the group there.”

They also asked about the proposal Lucas brought up a year or so back when he said he wanted to convert the original Star Wars trilogy into 3-D. “Oh yeah. The technology is very difficult. It exists - it’s just extremely expensive, and so what we’re trying to do is figure out a more practical way of pulling it off.”

Funny thing about the Star Wars 3-D rumor is that it was first announced back in March 2005 when Lucas wanted to have the first film ready by 2007 for the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. Yeah, that didn’t happen and at this point it doesn’t really need to.

I don’t think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was all that bad considering the other three. Seemd much in line with the other ones to me.
Don’t really see the need for a fith tho, unless Lucas and Spielberg think you just cannot have enough money……… ok good chance this’ll happen then.

Speaking of enough money and not needed.
That 3-D make-over for the original SW trilogy is first of all not needed (unless Lucas and Spielberg………) and it might be extremely expensive but that trilogy made far far far more I’m guessing.
What they’re trying to do is find a cheaper way to do it so the profit margins are higher.

Or am I being a bit cynical?

I made the mistake of hoping that if I went into Crystal Skull with lowered expectations, I might enjoy it. I don’t think I could have possibly lowered my expectations enough that the finished product could have exceeded them.

Also, Marion is played by Karen Allen, not Karen Black.

Okay, other than the nuclear fridge ride and Mutt swinging through the trees like Tarzan, I actually like “Crystal Skull;” it was better than “Temple of Doom.” Despite my belief that George Lucas is a WHORE!!!!, I gotta admit, Indy has still got it. I never thought I’d say this but, I welcome “Indiana Jones & the Search for Noah’s Ark” or whatever crazy name Indy V will receive. I think Mutt should return, plus I think its high time Indy made a trip to Egypt once more…..:-)

Oh the hyperbolic fits that fanboys throw. Crystal Skull did for me exactly what it was designed to, it provided 2 hours worth of cheesy, classic Indy fun, a nice escape on a hot Summer afternoon. I couldn’t care less about how it “ranks” with the others, they’re all there, in tact, whenever I want to watch them.

Bring on Indy 5 I say, and it can’t be too soon.
